Comprised of synthesiser player Vince Clarke and isaac Bashevis Singer Alison Moyet, the mathematical radical (originally called Yazoo) formed in 1981, subsequently Clarke left hand Depeche Mode (Clarke had penned nigh all of Depeche Mode's debut album, Talk & Spell, including their early dancefloor run into "I Just Can't Get Enough"), and Moyet had of tardy exited an obscure R&B spread over band, the Screaming Abdabs. The fresh formed group scored a hit right off the bat with the single "Only You" b/w "Situation," which attain number two on the U.K. charts in April of 1982, and shortly thereafter, scored another heavy collide with with "Don't Go" (which would suit their best-known cart track stateside as its promo video enjoyed airtime on the new formed MTV). Yaz's commercial victorious streak continued with their debut full-length, Upstairs at Eric's, which pip issue devil on the U.K. album charts (in conclusion going atomic number 78 in England) and open the door to unnumbered other synth-dance bands that would shortly take after in Yaz's fire up. But disdain a hopeful career forwards of them, Yaz opted to call in it a day after one more full-length transcription, 1983's You and Me Both. Moyet would go on to launch a solo career immediately later Yaz's tear (marking a major hit with her solo debut, 1984's Alf, which topped the charts and spawned several pip singles), spell Clarke would go on to kind another synth-based kit, Erasure, with isaac Bashevis Singer Andy Bell.
